Smash Music sit down for a chat with Betty Curse as she tells us about the new single, the debut album, nerves, playing shows and more... Man she's busy.

Phil: Tell me how the whole Betty Curse project came about.

Betty: It came about when I met Steve at an 80?s Matchbox B-line Disaster gig and he told me he wanted to start a band that was female fronted. He asked me if I could sing and I told him I could even though I couldn?t ? well I?d never tried before. I wanted to see what he was going to come with. We met up and I sang a track with him, we started writing together and now we?re here!

Phil: You released ?Excuse All The Blood? in late May, when are we likely to see an album release and musically, is the single an honest introduction to the sounds of Betty Curse?

Betty: Erm, I think so because it was a double A-side and both songs are kinda different dynamically. The album has a couple of acousticy breezy songs and a couple of heavier songs. It?s a good representation but there?s more?

Phil: Having not played many shows, do you get nervous? I mean, Download Festival must have been damn scary!

Betty: Yeah, ha-ha. It didn?t set in that I was playing Download until we got to the gates. We stayed over the night before and I couldn?t sleep and just before I went onstage I thought I was gonna to throw up! I never imagined in a million years that I?d be playing there at 19!

Phil: What else is planned for this year?

Betty: We have our first proper single on August 14 called ?God This Hurts?. I?ve got some time off now but in July we?ll probably do a few more shows and the album should be out in October. A busy year!

Phil: Who are your main influences ? personally and as a band?

Betty: I think personally it?s probably Cyndi Lauper because she had that whole cool pop thing going on but she had her own style and what she was doing wasn?t cheesy ? it was credible. I try to bring that to the darker pop that we have musically. It?s difficult because it?s my baby and I try not to be influenced by anything else.

Phil: Do you have any targets or aims for this year?

Betty: I don?t have any aims at all apart from keeping this going as long as possible. I?m just enjoying it right now. I can?t get my words out today ? I didn?t get much sleep last night!

Phil: Ha-ha, no worries.

Betty: What I?m trying to say is that this band could go so much further. I?m just looking forward to seeing where things go once the album?s released.

Phil: If you could play with any band in the world, who would you choose?

Betty: The Cramps!

Betty Curse release the new single 'God This Hurts' on August 14.
