Smash Music founder, Phil Storey talks to Engerica about their new album, depressing song titles and shite indie bands.

Phil: So it?s the first night of the tour with Yellowcard. Are you looking forward to the jaunt?

Dave: Preparations all went fine so yeah, we?re looking forward to it.

Phil: Okay. So your new single ?The Smell? is coming out on Monday. What?s it about and why did you choose it to precede the album?

Dave: Erm, It?s not about anything particular. It?s a silly song and I suppose the reason we chose that one is because we released it before and it did will then and it?s one of our more accessible songs you know. I think it covers what we?re about quite well.

Neil: It just sums up what we?re about in one song really.

Phil: And the video is great! How long did that take to shoot?

Dave: We recorded it in 1 day but then it took then about 6 weeks to put it all together. We did it over Christmas.

Phil: It?s not the kin of single that you expect to se from a band about to bring out their debut single. It?s the full amazing production reserved normally for only the ??biggest? bands on the block!

Dave: Surprisingly it didn?t cost too much to make.

Neil: It was weird recording it because we had to act like things were there when they weren?t, there?s stuff going around you and you?ve just got to act. It was weird but we enjoyed doing it.

Phil: You?ve released a few singles now. Are any of those going to find their way onto the album?

Dave: Yeah, they will all appear on album.

Phil: So what?s the album called?

Dave: The album?s called ?There Are No Happy Endings? and we called it that because it?s one of those phrases that we were knocking about.

Neil: We thought it would catch peoples attention. You kind of almost want people to get the ?ump when you call your album something like that.

Mike: We?re the Kings of miserable song titles!

Phil: Okay cool ? how?s long this tour?

Mike: It finishes on the 11th March and the album comes out on the 13th.

Phil: Have you played the Astoria before?

Mike: Nah ? it?s the first time. You know, we?re really excited about it. We?re a bit nervous but really excited.

Phil: What are you doing after this tour then?

Dave: We will find some other tours to go on. We?ll be writing some more and also we?re playing Download Festival in June.

Phil: What do you want to achieve by the end of the year?

Mike: Well we just hope tat the album does well. See a few records. The fact that it?s out itself is an achievement for us because all we ever wanted was to get an album in the shops so people can go and buy it you know. We can be a proper band!

Neil: Yeah, it would be nice to do some more Festivals and tour Europe an America too.

Phil: Who do you think you really sound like or are influenced by?

Dave: We like Therapy? We?re also into the Manics?, Holy Bible era as well.

Phil: Is that where the song title inspiration comes from?

Dave: It?s quite weird but it wasn?t too long ago that we got into that album.

Neil: We?re all into 80?s Matchbox too and after touring wit them we became really big bands. I think that changed things for us.

Phil: One last one. What do you all think of the current 80?s revival bands like The Killers and Franz Ferdinand etc?

Neil: What do you think we think? (jokingly)

Phil: (Speechless for about 5 seconds?) you hate them all?

Dave: A good song is a good song. You can dress it up in many different clothes I suppose.

Neil: You hear a lot of something and at first it?s great but you?ll get sick of it in the end. The Strokes were a good band when they first came out but then the whole scene just boils over, like the Arctic Monkeys who are everywhere?

Phil: ? I still don?t understand why though.

Mike: They probably deserve it and they?re probably sick of it by now!
