Quietly producing sophisticated Bloc Party-esque pop songs over the last couple of years this is the new single off of their debut album ‘In Case Of The Flood’. Originally released in summer 2005 ‘When We Are Gone’ is given another bash at a chart placing, not to be confused with the emo warblings of Fall Out Boy.
This sextet combine an edgy yet lush keyboard arrangement, menacing yet worldly vocals, militaristic drumming, eerie violins and minimal guitars. As singer Joe Winter sings “we might find ourselves in the front line, the chance as much yours as it is mine” over the fractured backing.
The song doesn’t seem to follow any traditional pop structures and its this that makes it stand out from much being played at the moment. Its not danceable, its not instantly noticeable as a sing-a-long, its more thoughtful, although the chorus is catchy which could see it be this years festival equivalent of Snow Patrols ‘Run’
