An ominous bass driven introduction seems surprising for a man often bracketed as an English Jack Johnson but it’s not long before chiming guitars and wistful vocals make sense of the comparison.

It should be noted though that Newton Faulkner does have an interesting voice, one capable of switching from a gravelly rumble to an impressive high almost effortlessly.

Faulkner seems set to shift vast quantities of records this summer and this polished effort will undoubtedly play a part in his success. He appears to possess more musical talent than several of his peers utilising some interesting and unusual sounds within a more traditional singer-songwriter framework.

However, whilst there are some flourishes that set this apart from the Blunts’ and Morrisons’ of this world it retains a tendency to lean toward the familiar. There is though enough strength in Faullkner’s song-writing to suggest his upcoming album will be worth a listen.

What will be interesting to observe though is whether Faulkner’s innovative side will usurp his pop sensibilities; it seems likely though that he’ll have to play it straight in order to sell. Personal taste will dictate whether or not this is a good thing.
