The first and most striking thing about this band is the remarkable resmblance between the singers voice and the voice of Jose Gonzales. The opening track is like a Jose Gonzales song with a drum machine and Kevin Shields noodling around in the background.
I’ve never heard of this band before but I’m impressed. It’s not immediately grab-you-by-the-throat stuff but I suspect that it might have a slow burn appeal. In general terms it sounds like a singer songwriter with a bedroom studio.
This is clearly a band who have an appreciation of more than just pop music and the fusion of electronic and traditional music tradition is proving to be a successful one. This can, surely, only be achieved by people who have a good understanding of both disciplines. In fact it’s not just an understanding but a love of both. Howling guitars meld with 808 kick/cymbal patterns to great effect.
A lot of the music here would be great on film soundtracks. I don’t say that because it’s bland and would not distract from the film. I say that because this music evokes images.
If you do like your Jack Johnson’s and Jose Gonzales’ of this world but are looking for something that might open your aural appreciation up a bit, you could do a lot worse.
