Ok. Let me just state that unlike a great deal of my peers I have nothing against Drum n Bass. In fact, one might go as far as to say that it was on of my early musical loves. I learned to mix with the early output of Goldie (Rufige Kru anybody?) and the output of Suburban Base and Moving Shadow holds a dear place in my record collection. However, I haven’t been interested in D n B for many years.
I’ve heard rumblings about how Pendulum are the brilliant saviours of DnB. On this reckoning it might be some time before I rekindle my love affair with this much maligned genre. Don’t get me wrong it’s not that this is a bad record it’s just that apart from it’s inherent hi-nrg nature…it’s not very exciting.
Granite starts with an eerie, bleepy orchestral section that sounds like it would be most at home as a promotional release for a Joel Schumacher directed Batman film. Then the Pendulum people bring the evil. High-tempo breaks, beefy electric guitars and a simple synth riff sitting astride all of that. There is a bored sounding vocal mixed in there as well. Now, I have to try and give you benchmarks so you can imagine what this track sounds like. Imagine, if you will, Temper Temper by Goldie and Stop The Rock by Apollo 440 having a child and then feeding it steroids and you’ll be halfway there.
Unfortunately for Pendulum I can imagine this track being a sure fire favourite with the bigoted, xenophobic curmudgeon that is Jeremy Clarkson. Congratulations Pendulum you have made a Top Gear track. I’ve done a little research on some DnB forums and it would appear the DnB head aren’t convinced by this track either.
All in all not terrible, not great, just mediocre.
