I’ve never really been a big fan of Underworld. I don’t particularly like Born Slippy. The last album of theirs that I heard was Dubnobasswithmyheadman, I wasn’t impressed.
In the interim period a few things have changed though. Firstly, and perhaps most importantly in this instance, I am now a house dj. Where perhaps I wouldn’t have given this sort of music the time of day when I was younger, I now play it on a regular basis.
I have to be honest. This is not too bad. I’m not too keen on the vocals. I’ve never really understood why you would have vocals on music like this. From what I can hear it does not really add any value to the music, if anything it actually dtracts from the overall intended effect. This is deep. Hypnotic, mesmeric house music. So why on earth would I want some nasal vocoder drenchedvoice whining at me. Maybe I’m just odd but I really can’t get on with it. I think I might quite like this lot if he didn’t sing.
I’m not really sure how well this album will be received. I can’t imagine it will win over hordes of new fans and whether it will please the existing fans? They’re all pretty devoted from what I can work out so they’ll probably just blindly lap it up. As for the undecided amongst us…I’m afraid to say that I’m still undecided.
