The Whip certainly are a band of the times. Their incessant bleepery could be described as bandwagon jumping after the impending success of Friendly Fires, Crystal Castle, Hadouken!, Late of The Pier, Cajun Dance Party et al.
It’s certainly been the year of the synth, and Manchester The Whip know this, their 3rd single brings a kind of generic and terrifying euro-pop vibe to the indie-dance cross over.
Taking it one step too far this is cheesier than an ABBA and Wham sandwich as being eaten by Robyn.
“You go your way and I’ll go mine” starts the lyrical ball rolling before they chip in with “giving me lines, but they never rhyme”.
They’re a band that maybe you need to see live, or have to be under 17 to appreciate.
If substandard indie-dance is your thing and you want to feel ‘hip’ you can catch their debut album, which is out in March 2008 and produced by Jim Abbiss (Arctic Monkeys, Editors, Kasabian).
Me, I wouldn’t bother, file with New Young Pony Club and put in the bin.
