Following 2007’s debut effort, The Maccabees return with the lead single from soon to be released second album 'Wall of Arms'. 'Love You Better' hints towards a similar sound to their first record, and whilst not leaping forward in huge strides, it shows a band progressing collectively.
Admittedly, amongst the mass of similar sounding U.K indie bands out there The Maccabees don’t stand out particularly well, as competent as they sound. The new single doesn’t do a whole lot to alter that image with swirling floaty verses anchored by guitars and a verse building up a chant of the track’s title. However, the sudden emergence of trumpets adds a twist to the formula.
With 'Love You Better' showing us what we can expect from their new material, it should do enough to get them through that difficult second album phase.
