‘Unicorns’ is a result of highly technical musicianship. British four piece Colour are the leading representatives of the new wave of so called ‘Math Pop’, with their debut single presenting a cross between the sub-genres of post-hardcore and match-rock, with innovative results.
There’s plenty of complex guitar-lead melodies and rhythms on show, all jammed into the song’s mere three minute and fifty two seconds. The varying speed and pace of ‘Unicorns’ is stop-start and disjointed, topped off with a range of vocals; all very complicated on paper. It may sound like a recipe for nothing but a musical racket, but such is the talent of Colour, it all pulls together seamlessly with perfect timing. However, perhaps too much thought has gone into it when things could be a lot simpler. Less is sometimes more, remember.
Nonetheless, they have managed to put all this into one song, where so many others would fail miserably. Pythagoras himself would struggle with the mathematics on this one. So leave the ‘math pop’ to these boys. Enjoy, wonder and be amazed.
