Hailing from South Hertfordshire, alongside artists such as Enter Shikari and Gallows, None the Less share more than just locality with both of the aforementioned artists if their debut mini-album ‘The Way To Save Ourselves’, is anything to go by.
Opening with the most commercial effort on the album, ‘The Payout’ is full of massive guitars, and big hooks with a chorus that sits somewhere between 30 Seconds To Mars and The Used. It’s immediately clear that None The Less have got that big American sound going on, just minus the ego.
‘Define’, is a thudding effort with double kick-drum choruses, and more hooks with a really nice little breakdown at 1:43. ‘News Of A Cancer’, is pretty much more of the same, and then there’s an interlude that shows a more acoustic side to the band, and does a good job of bridging to ‘I Had The World Resting On Me’, featuring lots of spiraling guitars and a really heavy beat-down, this is a close second favourite to the album opener.
‘Four 4’s’ is up next and it’s now that this album starts to drag its heels just a little. It’s not a bad song; just the victim of being queued towards the end of quite a few very similar songs and this is where I think None The Less could have mixed things up a little more.
Ending on ‘I’ll Feel Like Your Enemy’, it’s clear that we have a band on out hands here that clearly have the capability of big things. My only criticism would be that they need to differentiate their songs a little bit more to create more standout. They run the risk of criticism for sounding very American, but if it works, then who cares?
