Smash Music get the rare chance to have a
chat with ex Spiritualized man Sean Cook about his new project THE FLIES.
Phil (Smash Music) ? Let's jump straight it - tell me all
about The Flies.
Sean - Well it started something
like 4 years ago when I went to see some producer friends and I walked in as
they were playing this song ad going over and over it and they needed some
vocals so I said "I'll give it a go", so I did and it went really well. Then we
did another piece and that went really well. Then there were months and months
between when we would next do songs - in the end we got to the beginning of this
year and we had a whole album of songs. We were all into it and I always looked
forward to playing with the guys.
Phil - Why no live shows? Are you
going to do any in future?
Sean - We will be doing some live stuff at some point. I
think because of the way that this band evolved it's hard to just go out an play
a gig. There are three of us very multi-instrumental musicians who did the
record and basically we need a band! We need to sit down and translate this
record to the stage, There will be some gigs around the new year hopefully.
Phil ? Musically, how is this band different to
Spiritualized?
Sean - Musically it's very
different. Spiritualized was a much more traditional band. This band is more
fractured and not guitar and drums and reflects tat I'm a little bit older. You
start to feel a bit silly standing up there with your foot on the monitor when
you get to my age! I'm done with the Jimmy Page impersonations!
Phil ? When are you releasing the single and album?
Sean - The album should be out in
January and the new single is out on Monday 26th September.
Phil ? Finally, a question from the fans. What's on your
stereo at the moment?
Sean - Because we're always doing
this I often find I don't have an awful lo of time to listen to my records at
the moment. I've been listening to Roy Orbison and a lot of Funk and Soul. Oh,
and Mc5 and The Stooges just to remind me tat I'm not that old!
The new single 'Walking On The Sand' is out now through all
